Obtaining a CCW (carry concealed weapons) permit in Northern CA is much easier than many bay area and Southern CA counties. It is each Sheriff's policy which dictates whether you are able to receive a CCW, or not. The state of CA no longer requires "good cause" to obtain a permit.

You must schedule an appointment directly with the Placer County Sheriff Department, CCW division. You shall demonstrate good moral character, prove that you are an outstanding resident of Placer County, and be prepared to undergo a thorough and complete background check.

As public records have revealed, if you have no background concerns or issues, it is recommended that you take the training course, prior to your interview with the Placer County Sheriff's Department. If you have background concerns (criminal history, bad driving record, etc.), you should go through your interview prior to spending money on a CCW training course.

Upon approval of your Placer County CCW application, you will be required to complete at least an 16 hour CCW training, including demonstrating the ability to safely (and proficiently) handle and use the handguns (up to 3) to be on your permit, and you must "qualify" with each weapon to be on your permit, by specific serial number. Do yourself a huge favor, and take the BEST CCW training course available, and do not allow any shortcuts when taking this training. In CA, unfortunately, it is a "privilege" and not a right to be issued a CCW. Training is very important, and selecting the best instructor should be a very important factor, when you will be carrying a concealed weapon everyday. Regardless of the number of days, or how long the training is, or how far away the training center is, it is very crucial to know the laws of the state of CA, and particularly knowing the laws when it comes down to self defense, and where you are not allowed to carry weapons, etc., rather than just demonstrating that you can shoot a gun at a range.
